A Story About The Number 26
Shinji Ikari’s Walkman from Neon Genesis Evangelion
” You know what? Since someone took my number in this racing league, I’ll go for 26” – me to a mutual friend on my return to sim-racing in 2021.
I never really took much consideration into picking a number for racing in the simulated world. It’s pretend race cars and why would a number be significant in the grand scheme of things, right? Before this, I used to roll with the number “21” due to it being a part of my birthday day date and also the hook to that funny Earth, Wind and Fire song that people kept playing to my delight, because in most years, my birthdays were rather boring.
But in real life, race car drivers picked their number via their experience of using it. Perhaps to commemorate their favourite core memory, or they just really like that number. I choose my current number of “26” because someone already took mine and because back then, I just finished the incredible visual novel, You, and Me, and Her (aka Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi)
The game itself is an incredible thriller that I highly recommend if you want to see how an actual Visual Novel does its business in crafting a story that goes beyond the walls of a desktop application, because one part that stuck me hard was in it’s manual of all place, where there is a sequence of numbers that kept me on my toes to make sure I could save one of my favorite characters in the game. A number that is also her birthdate, “2605”.
“26”
Yeah, let’s go with that, I thought to myself. 26 is a weird number to use. You don’t really see it that much in actual racing (hence why Talladega Night’s Ricky Bobby used it), and it’s coincidentally my parents and granparent’’s favourite number because they were born on the 26th.
There’s also this scene from the start of Evangelion 2.22 that’s essentially Shinji switching over from to track 26 to 27, signifying the story moving forward from the main show.
Like I could go on, and on about the numbers but like an actual race driver I suppose, the reasons could be as wild of a coincidence as mine or as mundane as them going “it’s the one that’s available so why not”.
It’s not like today’s newsletter is the 26th or something… wait.
